We’ve all been there, we’ve all done that. My recent travels are something I can point to that speak volumes about how healthy (that’s a joke) life has been thus far in 2016. So much for my #1 New Years Resolution! Just joking, I’m not getting off course or throwing in the towel. I knew I’d be traveling a lot and doing a lot of travel in early 2016, and I’m not going to let that deter me from getting lean and mean.
Today, I’m going to share with you how to detox your body after going on a bender. (A bender being a series of days where you drink too much, eat too much, and don’t work out or pay attention to health.) First, here is what my life has looked like since December 19th, 2015.
8 Days in Minnesota with sub zero temperatures to spend time with family and friends for Christmas.
Ever try to lose weight in sub zero temps? It’s not easy. Survival is tough in that kind of weather, and I literally look to comfort foods, craft beer, and whiskey, to keep me warm. That’s not a good recipe for losing weight. Oh yeah, I went to the Vikings vs. Bears game and if you have ever tailgated in Minnesota before a game, well, it gets pretty heavy on the beers.
Las Vegas for a trade show.
Being “healthy” in Vegas should be illegal. However, even if you try to watch your consumption, drinks are free at casinos and food is amazing. Add in that I was entertaining vendors and it makes it nearly impossible to come out feeling normal!
Minnesota for an Ice Fishing Tournament.
This sums up my Minnesota friends in a few words when we get together for any type of “guys weekend” trip. Beer. Cards. Pizza.
Grand Cayman for vacation.
This one wasn’t so bad. I got to jog every day down Seven Mile Beach, which was difficult, yet lovely. I was in the sun, swimming with stingrays, snorkeling in the ocean, and eating very healthy seafood. So what sounds bad about this? One of my friends was ordering frozen drinks like it was her job, well, that makes the calorie count rocket up quite fast!
Costa Rica on business.
I lived in Costa Rica for years. It’s my home away from home. I had to visit all my old haunts and eat meals I dearly miss, as well as catch up with friends over beers. Being that we moved around the country a lot meant a lot of eating in restaurants, which isn’t always akin to healthy living. But when in Rome……
Now, let’s talk about what I do when I return from trips like this….DETOX.
It’s been a wild ride, and it’s not like when I travel I like to go find the nearest gym and spend the whole time trying to look as big as I can for everyone. At my age, its quite the opposite.
Here are My Five Hacks for Detoxing After a Trip or Bender
#1: Water.
This isn’t a secret, yet many people forget how simple it is to simply drink your way out of being bloated. As an owner of an anti aging company, among other ventures in the health and wellness space, I always drink plenty of water for the obvious health benefits. Drinking water alone can help you lose weight, but more importantly, feel fuller and therefore you won’t continue to feed the beast and become even more bloated.
Extra Credit: Start every day with a tall glass of water with the juice of a lemon inside.
#2: Fiber.
This continues the theme of what goes into your body helps get out all the madness and chaos that’s inside. Consume fiber after a bad trip of pizza, burgers, wings, jalapeno poppers, and all the other stuff you threw right down the hatchet.
#3: Mate Fit.
You can substitute any detox tea, but I found Mate Fit to the best detox tea for me. It gets all the crap out of me without having me sit on the john all day long. Plus, it’s very tasty.
#4: Work Out.
When in doubt, sweat it out. Throw on some UA clothing and get your ass to the gym. Run around, play sports, take the dogs for a walk, etc. You’ve probably been very idle and eating a lot of calories, so shock your body by throwing a serious workout in there and keep the heart rate up by doing small activities along the way. Take the stairs when you go up two to three floors instead of taking the elevator. Look, you’ve had a massive calorie overage, and now you need to do all you can to turn that around – FAST. Look to get an advantage in your calorie deficit any way possible.
Use health supplements if need be. Read more about those on this page.
#5: Eat Fruits, Veggies, & Fish.
You need to eat healthy foods that can go through your system fast. Eating a ribeye, as awesome as that is, isn’t going to help. Sure, going low carb is smart for a while now, but you need to eat things that you are going to get out of your system fast. Low calorie foods like fish, veggies, and fruit are perfect.
When on vacation, I usually eat a HUGE breakfast or if it’s quick and easy – a big, carb loaded, fat loaded bagel with all the fixin’s. When I’m at home, I change this up to fresh fruit. It makes a huge difference.
I literally am on my first day back from Costa Rica, where I consumed a ton of adult beverages pool side and at Super Bowl parties, so I’m going through this regimen right now. It really works. I’ll drop 5-6 pounds of weight I picked up by the time the weekend rolls back around. The main question now is, can I behave this weekend? 🙂
