I’m not one to shave often. I work from home so it affords me the ability to not have to be clean shaven every day in an office setting. And while I wasn’t blessed with the thickest head of hair on top of my head, it was made up for with being able to grow a thick beard in short order. Plus all the girls I’ve dated have preferred me with facial hair (I swear I look at least 10 years younger when my face is bare), so who am I to argue if they prefer me that way?
I will do a razor shave down to the skin when the occasion calls for it — weddings and stuff like that — but mostly I just take it down with an electric razor to a short stubble. I go through a cycle every 2-3 weeks… stubble, beard, stubble, beard. Rinse and repeat.
Philips QG3364/49 Norelco Multigroom 5100 Grooming Kit
Many years ago I bought a cheap electric trimming set from CVS and it lasted me a long time, almost 10 years I’d say. It got the job done, but the battery life was no longer what it used to be, and there were other flaws – not being able to operate while plugged in (charging) being the main one. So I went to Amazon and looked for something to replace the cheap set I had before.
After looking at a few models and customer reviews, I settled on one from Philips Norelco and couldn’t be happier. It comes with 7 attachments that will take care of all you need for your face and head.
asdI particularly like the fine-tuning that can be done with the beard comb attachment where you can customize the length down to the millimeter. There’s also a hair comb attachment which you can use for buzzing your head to the length of your desire. I have not used that yet, but like I mentioned in the beginning of this review I don’t have a full head of hair up top and wear it in a buzz, so maybe next time instead of going to Supercuts I’ll have my girlfriend try giving me a haircut with this device.
In addition to the two comb attachments, there’s also a full-size metal guard trimmer, precision trimmer, nose trimmer, detail foil shaver, and stubble comb. It’s pretty much “all in one” with the 7 attachments for this device.
As for performance, I didn’t realize how crappy my old CVS-bought one was until I tried this out the first time. The metal shaver is a lot sharper than my old set, yet you don’t have to worry about nicking yourself at all. I usually just use it without any of the combs/guards and take it down to the skin with a tiny bit of stubble and it gives me a nice shave. I use the beard comb attachment for my sideburns and it has worked great.
Here’s a few more specs on this grooming kit from their Amazon page:

- Charging: 1 hour full charge, Quick charge
- Automatic voltage: 100-240 V
- 2-year guarantee
- Self sharpening blades

While there are pricier models out there that I took a look at, this Philips Norelco model at around $30 on Amazon was just what I needed and gets the job done very well. It’ll definitely be getting use each time through my beard / no beard cycle and I’ve happily tossed my old grooming kit in the trash.
